Mount Desert Island's final race each season is held on the Columbus Day
weekend. Begun originally by International One-Design racers as a bit of a
hoot, in recent years Luders 16 sailors have been invited to participate,
too. This is the first year Luders have outnumbered their larger
counterparts, the IOD's. Rather cleverly, the Homer brothers, who run the
races, decided that the Luders and IOD ought also compete against each
other. This worked out so beautifully that it will likely be repeated in
later years.
In previous years, the IOD skippers competed for a porcelain troll - given
originally by the well-meaning Norwegian representatives when the Northeast
Harbor Fleet hosted that class's World Championship. Too dreadful to
display, the recipients, their hosts, hid the troll until inspiration led
him to donate it as the winning trollphy for the Columbus Day event.
Last year, in moments of abandon, the Schoeder family (owners of both an IOD
and Luders) presented a Luders cup; this being a perpetually smiling supine
bovine as equally appalling as the troll. Some thought this generosity was
highly suspect.
This Columbus Day event is governed by several interesting rules. Boats are
supposed to use old sails, but this aspect is not wholly enforced. On
downwind legs, the leading boat is prohibited from flying a spinnaker.
Competitors are welcome to, but must quickly lower them when they assume the
lead - as inevitable. In closely matched races, when the lead frequently
changes, there is much up and down activity.. Spinnakers tend to fly up much
quicker than they are lowered - prompting consternation and loudness among
rivals.
RACE RESULTS AS REPORTED BY S. VITELLI.
Everyone, the 2006 Trollphy has now entered into the rolls of history. We
had perfect weather, and eight boats (3 IOD's and 5 L-16s). The results are
attached. We raced under a handicap system devised by Dick Homer, with the
Luders starting first in a pursuit race format. The handicap was so
perfectly devised that in race 1 Mischief beat Red Hot by a second, and in
race 2 Red Hot beat Mischief by a second! Awards and general jollity
ensued. We are still undecided if the fact that the Trollphy itself is
missing in action contributed or detracted from the evening ... Thank you to
all participants and contributors!
yrs. respectfully, the Trollphy Committee
