LUDERS WANTED BY MAINE SAILING FACILITY
This is a follow-up to an earlier missive by Glenn Squires, of the Mount
Desert Island Community Sailing Center.
The board of this facility recently voted to sell some of its existing
fleet (including two J-24's) and buy Luders 16's for its sailing and
racing programs. The revival of Luders racing on Mount Desert (after a
30 year hiatus) was in no small part due to the enthusiasm and support
of Glenn and the sailing center he manages. It could not have happened
without them.
For the past two summer a generous summer family has loaned their
beautifully kept Luders (Weetamoe - two photos of it in the recent
WoodenBoat Magazine) to the MDI CSC where it has proved a popular
addition and is regularly raced. (Second places in the July and August
series). Each fall it has been returned to its boatyard without a
scratch on it - so good is CSC's oversight.
The MDI CSC is probably unique in Maine in the variety and depth of its
offerings - which include sailing and racing instruction, winter racing
in Bullseyes, special women's twilight racing, interclub high school
racing in 420s, suppers, lectures and a number of other nautical-related
offerings. In an area of an almost extreme in social strata, this
facility attracts all ages and social backgrounds. It is very much a
plus in the Luders class to have a program of this quality to adopt the
Luders as its primary larger racing boat. Most particularly, it is a
great boost for the local Luders fleet. They will be a responsible home
for newly acquired Luders.
The Mount Desert Island Community Sailing Center is non-profit and
donations would be tax-deductible. They will consider trades (e.g.
Luders for a J-24, etc.) and be open to other arrangements (such as a
direct purchase).
If you know of a Luders 16 for sale, please contact Glenn Squires at:
gsquires at lsrobinson.com in Southwest Harbor, Maine.
PS. SW Harbor is one pretty anchorage, too!!
